As Saul’s life spiraled into turmoil, the choices he made only deepened his despair. The prophet Samuel had previously warned Saul about his disobedience to God, leading to God's withdrawal from him, and in turn, this caused Saul to struggle with terrifying visions and feelings of abandonment. When you're filled with doubt and fear—much like Saul was—it's tempting to turn in all sorts of directions for guidance, even if those directions are strange or misaligned with your core beliefs.

Consider who Saul could have turned to but didn't: the prophets of Baal. This highlights a fascinating aspect of the narrative. While he was desperate enough to visit a spiritual medium deported by God’s law—specifically the witch of Endor—he did not seek advice from followers of Baal, those exceedingly questionable figures. Baal worship involved rituals and sacrifices, and these would normally align with various treacheries against the Hebrew God. The very fact he didn’t turn to these prophets reveals a level of internal conflict, suggesting that deep down, Saul had a recognition of the original covenant and an understanding that perhaps the Path of Baal wasn’t the answer.

Saul’s dilemma poses a relatable question for us all: In our moments of crisis, where do we seek our counsel?
