Bible Trivia
How should we practise charitable works, prayers and fasting?
In Matthew 6:1-18, Jesus crafts a beautifully simple message about the authenticity of our spiritual practices—cutting right to the heart of the matter. He advises us to perform our charitable deeds, prayers, and fasting in secret. Now, imagine it this way: charity isn't just a public display, it's about that heartfelt connection between yourself, Others, and the divine. When Jesus talks about not being like the Pharisees, he's targeting what we would call performative spirituality—actions that don't necessarily reflect true inner goodness. You see, the Pharisees loved the spotlight; they would trumpet their good deeds, almost inviting applause! But for Jesus, the inner motivation is paramount. Practicing in secret acknowledges that the essence of our faith lies in genuine connection, rather than public admiration.
This focus on genuine intention also resonates with various ancient traditions. For example, in some spiritual circles, “the left hand shouldn’t know what the right is doing”, emphasizing low-key goodness. Interestingly, during the Cold War, Eastern European churches often had to practice their faith discreetly—similar to Jesus’ encouragement.
Now, let’s remember that the spirit of charity, prayer, and fasting isn’t limited to isolation; it can allows us to quietly uplift others while avoiding ostentation. By embodying this humility, the act of giving, praying, or fasting transforms into a profound personal growth experience. Each moment becomes a chance to extend love without the need for an audience. Simple as that!
