Metals in scripture

When you think of metals mentioned in the Bible, you might first conjure up gold, silver, or iron. Each of these metals carries a wealth of symbolism and cultural significance. For example, gold often represents purity and divinity, as in the description of God's presence being akin to glimmering gold (Exodus 25:11). Silver, on the other hand, can reflect ideas of redemption and the value of sacrifice, especially since it was the price paid for Jesus’ betrayal (Matthew 26:15).

But what about zinc? It makes sense that it slipped through the cracks of biblical mention because it was used much less in ancient times than the shinier, more prestigious metals. Interestingly, the science of metallurgy was presented quite advanced in ancient cultures, although specific details tended to concentrate on the more prominent materials.

As zinc wasn't prominent in Old Testament rituals or tools, one must wonder what other intriguing lessons about metals we can learn. For instance, consider iron's symbolic relationship with strength and oppression. The Nemesis of Pharaoh's numerous iron chariots comes to mind, a powerful image in the story of the Exodus. The ancient Egyptians even utilized copper—zem (zinc was often used in copper's alloy to produce brass)—which implies there were innovative practices at play long before the Big Bang of the industrial age.

So, when reviewing metals in scripture, let's appreciate those dramatic moments and connections they inspire, while also dusting corners of obscurer history like zinc! Who knows? There are probably a zillion stories in those quiet parts of the rich biblical narrative!
