What tribe was given a portion of Judah as their inheritance?

When we dive into the Book of Joshua, it’s fascinating to see the intricate land divisions among the tribes of Israel. To have the tribe of Simeon essentially tucked inside of the territory of Judah may seem odd at first glance, but it illustrates a key aspect of tribal dynamics and relationships during this period. While Judah was the largest tribe with the most land, Simeon was more like a little brother trying to find his place – sharing a neighbor's backyard, so to speak.

Now, why do you think this happened? It’s believed that the inseparable bond between camp and family was a deliberate choice in providence. The tribe of Judah was known for its strength, and being intermingled with Simeon potentially provided safety and community. Imagine their tribal gatherings! Archaeologists have found indications that the regions shared by these tribes were densely populated with both agriculture and cities, proving that unity amongst them created a stronger communal front.

What’s more interesting is how this gives us insight into patterns that emerge elsewhere in the Bible. The sharing of territory among tribes encourages a larger narrative of cooperation, communal responsibility, and the notion of being "shepherds" of the land God grants them. Overall, rather than shaking things up, this arrangement echoed familial harmony. That ainsi, Gideon slowing down on ‘the’ well-known rock-solid foundation of kin— “brotherly love” —paved the way to future cohabitation that we can glean from skipping ahead to future stories of unity and conquest.
