How did Judas betray Christ?

Isn't it wild how a symbol that usually represents love and loyalty - a kiss - became the very act that led to the betrayal of Jesus? Judas, one of His closest friends, chose this intimate gesture to identify Jesus to the authorities. Traditionally, a kiss on the cheek is a gesture filled with warmth and connection, yet in this moment, it curdled into something profoundly dark.

This act of betrayal is often likened to other biblical stories where things that seem beautiful on the surface twist into something sinister. For example, think of the apple in the Garden of Eden, which was a symbol of knowledge but also brought about humanity’s fall. The parallel is clear; betrayal and tragedy are sometimes cloaked in familiar, tender moments.

Adding to the emotional weight is the depth of Jesus's response. He didn’t lash out or condemn Judas; instead, He questioned him tenderly, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" This reminds us that eye-watering compassion is at the heart of His message.

Judas isn't spared the complexity either; he makes headlines throughout biblical history as a symbol of treachery as well as misunderstanding. Fun fact: many people speculate about his motivations. Did he believe he could force Jesus' hand to reveal His power, or did he just succumb to greed? Such layers make the story eternally relevant, inviting continuous reflection and thought on the complexities of human loyalty and love.
